M20 is a combination of a hydrogen-alpha emission nebula and a blue reflection nebula lying 4100 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. It is called the Trifid Nebula because the hydrogen-alpha nebula is divided into three lobes by the silhouetted dark nebula, which is also designated Barnard 85. M20 is difficult to image from my observatory as it only appears for a few minutes between trees on my southern horizon.
